Supervision
The CCMO supervises the activities of accredited medical ethics review committees (MRECs) in the Netherlands.
The supervisory role of the CCMO can be divided into three categories: supervision in advance (such as the assessment of regulations, the expertise and independence of the members of accredited MRECs), for cause supervision (following incidents, reports, signals and the like) and continuous supervision (monitoring of quality). The continuous improvement process of the recognized MRECs is central to this.
The CCMO started in 2011 with ongoing supervision. This form of supervision focuses in particular on the basic principles of the medical-ethical review procedure, making visible the essential and vulnerable points of the review process and stimulating self-reflection at the recognized MRECs. In its annual reports, the CCMO reports on its supervisory actions during the relevant period.
