Children and youngsters

Research involving research subjects who are younger than 16 is only allowed if the research complies with special rules. Youngsters aged between 12 and 16 sign the declaration of consent themselves along with both their parents or guardian. In the case of children younger than 12 both parents or their guardian must give their written consent.

If you change your mind, or if your child changes his/her mind, you always have the right not to participate. Minors and their parents can always stop, even while the research is going on. They do not need to say why.

Objection

Researchers must withdraw minors from the research if they object. Examples of objections are (indications of) fear, sadness, or anger.

Non-participation

If you do not want your child to participate in the research, you do not need to take any additional action. You do not have to sign anything. Neither do you need to explain why you do not want to participate.

If your child is a patient, they will receive the normal treatment they would otherwise receive.
